Clearwater Elk Collaborative

In 2003, US Senator Crapo convened a collaborative effort that would explore ways to increase elk herds to sustainable levels. ESPRI provided funding and other logistical support to the collaborative effort which delivered its final report to Senator Crapo in August 2004.

In 2002, a group of constituents concerned about the decline in the population numbers of the Clearwater Elk Herds contacted US Senator Miike Crapo for assistance. In response to these requests, he sponsored an Elk Summit that was held on January 25, 2003, in Lewiston, Idaho, to gather factual information about the elk populations and potential causes of decline. During the meeting summary, Senator Crapo asked all participants whether they were interested in moving forward with a collaborative effort that would explore ways to increase elk herds to sustainable levels by building a consensus among collaborative participants. A show of hands indicated near unanimous support for a new collaborative effort.

The collaborative effort began meeting during the Spring of 2003 and concluded in July of 2004.
