Cottonwood Creek Fire Reconstruction

Graduate student Melanie Vining is working to reconstruct fire of the Cottonwood Creek drainage (i.e., Rocky Canyon, including Picket and Five Mile creeks). The impetus of the research is to better understand the natural fire regime as major fires in the Boise Foothills are closely related to flooding, debris, and mudflows into the city. It is hoped that a reconstruction of this nature in this large drainage will provide insight into the hazards related to fires and fire-caused mass movements and will allow land management agencies and the City to effectively mitigate damage.
